Reengineering
There are different kinds of improvement methods (PDCA-based, Six Sigma, LEAN, Benchmarking, Reengineering, etc.), and each has its proponents as the “best” method. In truth, though, each is best suited for different kinds of improvement opportunities. Reengineering works well in situations where a preliminary analysis has revealed that the process or system is completely dysfunctional...little or no aspects merit continuation. In short, there is a need to start over.
As a result of these circumstances, Reengineering involves obtaining a very detailed understanding and analysis of customer needs. The needs are then used to drive further analysis of all aspects of the system, including environment, work flow options, material and equipment, information, and human resource elements. A new design is then developed and the P-D-C-A cycle is used to test the new design.
Reengineering is typically undertaken only after the development of a carefully developed Team Charter, the selection of a Team comprised of employees and managers with working knowledge of the process or system, and the preparation of both a Work Plan and Communication Plan. An outside facilitator with Reengineering experience can greatly aid the Team in their work.
When improving existing processes will not produce enough gain to meet customer needs and expectations, it may be time to consider Reengineering. Contact SCS for a free meeting and assessment.
